Hey hey! It's Monday again, so that means an update.
This week is a great opportunity to talk about my plans for 2023, so let's get into them:
If there's one thing I'd really like to make succeed this year, it's my project, Fall of Camelot. This is the main thing I really want to focus on for 2023.
I’m going to try to complete a set of articles and art for the project every month. This month's set is for the fairly obscure hero Sir Balin:
There are multiple characters and texts involved in the story of Sir Balin - too many to finish all of them in a single month - so this month I’ll be trying to finish the art and texts for Sir Balin himself, as well as some of the art for the site as a whole, such as the homepage splash banner. Next month I’ll try to finish the art and articles for the other characters in the story, and work further on the site’s design.
My ultimate goal is to build something noteworthy, something worth remembering that is part of something bigger than itself. When people study the Arthurian legends, I want my art and stories to be some of the things they come across and reference, along with the artists and writers who came before me.
I stopped posting on social media a few years ago. At the time the return on my time investment appeared to be very low, so I decided to stop and try to find a more effective way to share. Livestreaming on Twitch was effective to a point, but I'd reached something of a ceiling with it and it definitely wasn’t paying my bills.
Instead, I focused on building sites for a couple of years, which was definitely the right decision.
Now I'd like to try again with social media, as I'll be able to direct people to my sites, which will provide a way to offer a lot more to people than social media can.
While I plan to do the typical image posts, I want to try out making a load of video content for Tiktok, YouTube shorts, Instagram reels, and Pinterest video pins.
Clip Studio Paint records my painting process in the background, so I already have a bunch of video slowly piling up. I may as well put it to use and share my painting process with a wider
I have a large collection of timelapse video
As a small aside, I am a little tempted to use the 24 hour ‘story’ format to act like a bit of an idiot on my social media. I’ve always found posting on social media to be a bit dry and boring, so perhaps if I make it fun for myself I’ll actually keep up with it this time. I usually just act like myself on my Twitch streams, which sometimes means acting like an idiot, and they are fun to do.
I want to get things rolling out to social media again by the end of January.
I want to write a post here every week. The plan is that every month I’ll write a personal article, like this one; a digital art article, like the one a couple of weeks ago about AI; a Fall of Camelot update article, and an end of month wrap-up article.
The digital art article will also go on SelfemployedArtist.com; the Fall of Camelot article will also appear on FallofCamelot.com.
For any of the articles that seem to fit, I’ll also upload to other sites such as Medium, Substack, Tumblr, DeviantArt, Artstation etc.
Whenever I have writing juice left in my veins, I’ll work on texts for FallofCamelot.com and more articles for SelfemployedArtist.com.
Speaking of SelfemployedArtist.com, I'm going to concentrate on writing about what I know well. For a while, I thought the site could become a one-stop shop for art information, but I think that contributed to me getting a bit burnt out on the writing.
Instead, I’ll narrow the focus to what I know best - things like the iPad, Clip Studio Paint, Twitch streaming, painting characters, landing commissions, and some of the art fundamentals.
I’ve had my toe in a few different kinds of education for a couple of years now, but haven’t pushed them any further:
I've had an ebook, to help artists land freelance and commissions, half-finished for quite a while now. I really should finish it off and get it out there.
I made a couple of Skillshare classes a few years ago, and I would love to make more video content, both for YouTube and for premium platforms like Skillshare. I may try recording my monthly digital art articles as youtube videos, and perhaps as podcasts.
I had planned to begin mentoring again at some point this year, but a few people have already expressed interest, so I'm going to make it a priority to get the ball rolling asap.
The current plan is to have a once-a-week meeting with each student for an hour or so, probably running for two months.
I plan to keep it 1-on-1 and limit the number of students I work with, probably only one to three at a time. Prices will start low and gradually rise if demand increases, with a first-come-first-serve queue system.
Another thing I hope to get finished by the end of the month is launching the joint digital art education website with my buddies, with the hope that by the end of 2023 it will be fairly self-sustaining and all of the contributors will be actively rewarded for their contributions.
So there you have it! These are my 2023 goals. I fully expect I’ll fail at some, but hopefully make up for it by exceeding my expectations in others.
I hope you guys stick with me through the journey, so we can look back on all the things we accomplished.
May 2023 be our year!
