Vampires are pretty interesting beings, and there are many questions that remain unanswered for vampire lovers. In this article, we try to answer six of the most popular questions about the undead bloodsuckers!
Why Do Vampires Drink Blood?
Greek vampires, the vrykolakas, don’t drink blood; they eat human flesh—not because they need it, but because they are jealous of the living.
However, in later vampire stories, they drink blood because it is considered the source of all life. Vampires are undead creatures, and to continue living they need to steal life from real living beings. The best option is the blood of a human, since they were once human, and it gives them more power and more time; but if they do not want to kill a human, then they can drink the blood of other animals.
In some other stories, it is believed that vampires need blood because they cannot go into the sun and get vitamin D, so they obtain it from the blood of other living beings. Also, blood is high in vitamins and minerals which, since a vampire is an undead creature, they cannot produce naturally and must take from blood.
How Do Vampires Drink Blood?
It completely depends on the writer of the story; however, the most common way for vampires to drink blood is to bite an artery or vein in the neck of their victims with their sharp fangs and then suck the blood out.
Some authors also come up with the idea of making vampire fangs similar to snake fangs, but instead of injecting poison into the victim’s body, they are hollow and can suck the blood directly into the vampire’s veins.
Do Vampires Have Blood?
If you are referring to Greek vampires, then no, they do not have blood in their veins since they are undead creatures. But they do eat human organs, especially livers which are filled with blood. And that makes them swell and take on a drum-like form with ruddy-colored skin.
However, if you are asking about more modern vampires, such as those in Underworld, then they do have blood. There are many scenes where a vampire is torn apart and there is blood everywhere, or when they are wounded, they bleed.
In some vampire stories, such as The Originals, a person only turns into a vampire after they have drunk the blood of the vampire who bit them, so for sure they do have blood.
Do Vampires Fart? Pee? Or Even Go to the Bathroom?
Vampires in Greek mythology don’t go to the bathroom. They eat livers and become bloated because they cannot expel waste from their bodies.
But vampires in The Originals and all modern stories not only drink blood but can also eat normal human foods without becoming bloated, so they must fart, poop, and pee to get rid of all the excess substances that their bodies do not need in the first place.
Can Vampires Turn Into Animals?
As with everything else, it depends on the story. For example, in Hotel Transylvania, vampires can turn into bats. Also, the vampires in The Vampire Diaries novels, Nosferatu, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and Dark Shadows can turn into an animal.
However, in Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles, Twilight, and The Vampire Diaries television series, vampires do not have such powers.
What Do Vampires Love?
If you are referring to Greek vampires (vrykolakas), I can tell you that they don’t drink blood or tea. They don’t fall in love or help people. Instead, they like to hurt the living—scaring them by throwing objects, or knocking on their door and killing whoever answers. They like to sit on a sleeping person and crush their bones under the weight of their body. But most of all, they like to eat the liver of their victims.
But if you are referring to new vampires, such as those in The Originals or Twilight, then things are different. They like everything that a normal human loves, plus blood. They can even fall in love and enjoy drinking tea with their friends.
